If you look on www.dictionary.com, the definition reads, “noun, Italian, secrecy sworn to by oath; code of silence.” The word is omerta. This is a code that is something to live by if you are in or have grown up in what’s known as the “lifestyle.” Loyalty to your family and friends are paramount to everything else. In other words, keep your mouth shut!

Recently, Peter “Bud” Zucarro, a former Gambino family member turned informant for the FBI testified in court during the John Burke trial I had written about previously. He basically blames the fall of the mob on certain mob members, namely the more famous John Gotti for ignoring omerta. The murder of Paul “Big Paul” Castellano, the former head of the Gambino Crime Family was the beginning. John Gotti rose to the top of the family after Big Paul was brutally murdered in Manhattan in 1985. It was front page news!

Also, anyone who has read anything about John Gotti, knows that he was referred to as the “Dapper Don”. Let’s face it; he sure was in your face in the media in his top notch suites smiling for the cameras. Even his mug shot was a testament to what he thought of himself
