I was definitely hesitant to read a book about a Jewish mobster. I assumed it just would not be interesting. We all know the first exciting thing you think of when the word mob comes to mind is, the Italian crime families in the mafia, right? Well, I was wrong! I found some interesting writings within the book called ” Growing Up Jewish In The Mob” , written by Hillary Cohan. She was the daughter of Nathan ‘Reds’ Cohan, and she gives her testimony of how it was living with the Jewish mobster.
Although, I must admit. I was not happy about the whole ‘names are changed to protect the blah blah…’ concept. I think I lost a lot of potential enjoyment of a reality book. It felt like I was reading a fiction novel, even though it was not. It was Hilary’s true story. I was slightly bummed, I could not find any links to who Red’s ran with, or what mob members he was associated with. Because I could not research their names.
But, I certainly found interest in a huge lesson that is hardly learned when thinking about the mob. We always forget that the flip side of these killers, there is a side of family. The relationship of Reds Cohan, and his daughter can teach us all that aside from the ‘business’ end of the mob, these individuals had a side to them that was unheard of to most, except those around them. Reds was not only a Jewish mobster by profession. Reds was an amazing father. Reds was an amazing friend.
Read this book, and learn your own lesson about the relationship between a Jewish mobster, and his daughter, & family. It could also teach you lessons about the flip side of all mobsters as individuals, when it comes to their families.
